Romanian authorities suspect the man of being connected to a network of agents coordinated by the Russian state, which is allegedly involved in operations against several European countries. The investigation is also probing his links to a weapons cache discovered near Berlin.
Documents cited by Der Spiegel, originating from a Polish investigation, suggest that the suspect traveled by bus from Poland to Berlin on October 1 of last year. During this trip, he allegedly picked up two packages containing firearms from a roadside in East Berlin. He subsequently hid them in an underground space near a lake in southeast Berlin. After securing the weapons, he returned to Poland.
The Ukrainian was detained in Bucharest alongside another Ukrainian national.
They are suspected of having shipped incendiary devices through the courier service Nova Post. Romanian intelligence believes this activity is part of a broader sabotage network coordinated by Russia.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt commented on the case last week, describing the suspect as an 'agent de rang inferior' and noting that he was likely unaware of the full command structure of the network. The suspect is also linked to the preparation of parcel bomb attacks.
Germany is currently considering requesting the extradition of the suspect from Romania. Russian authorities have not confirmed any details regarding the case, and the Russian Embassy in Berlin has not provided any immediate comments. German federal prosecutors and Polish security officials have also declined to offer details.
