Turkey Pursues Interpol Arrest Warrant for Netanyahu Over Flotilla Incident

Turkey has taken steps to secure an Interpol arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, linked to the interception of a Gaza aid flotilla in May. This move is part of an ongoing domestic criminal case in Turkey, which accuses Israel of human rights violations and breaches of international law.

Netanyahu's office responded by labeling Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan an "anti-Semitic dictator." The warrant? "Pathetic" political maneuvering. Israel has vowed to counter Turkey's attempts to destabilize the region, asserting that it is the only true democracy in the Middle East.

The incident in question involved Israeli forces opening fire on the Global Sumud Flotilla, which consisted of approximately 50 vessels attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. Activists on board were detained by the Israeli military. They were taken to prison. They were subsequently expelled. Some activists have alleged that they faced physical or sexual violence during their detention.

Turkish Justice Minister Akin Gurlek confirmed on social media platform X that domestic arrest warrants have been issued for Netanyahu and Israeli soldier Afek Moskovitch, with charges including genocide, crimes against humanity, and torture. The Turkish Justice Ministry has requested the Interior Ministry to issue Interpol red notices. These are provisional arrest requests pending extradition.

Moskovitch is accused of actions in Gaza. He allegedly posted footage of tanks destroying buildings at the Islamic University of Gaza, which included a hospital and a medical faculty. Meanwhile, Israel denies the charges of human rights violations.

The situation has further strained relations between Turkey and Israel, who have also exchanged criticisms over recent Israeli airstrikes in Syria, with Turkey condemning these strikes and criticizing the United States while Israel has expressed concerns over Turkey's influence in Syria since 2024. Ankara has linked Israeli rhetoric to the upcoming Israeli elections.
