Simion Criticizes Grindeanu's Private Talks with AUR MPs

George Simion, leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), has called on Sorin Grindeanu of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) to cease private discussions with AUR members of parliament. Simion also criticized Grindeanu for demanding 'good conduct proofs' from AUR, a prerequisite for potential negotiations on forming a government coalition between PSD and AUR.
Simion has not outright dismissed the idea of a PSD-AUR government but has set conditions for future talks, insisting that PSD must change its approach and meet AUR's demands. "I am much more concerned with the fate of democracy," Simion said, highlighting his concerns.
Grindeanu had previously not excluded a coalition with AUR, although he initially stated he would not lead such a government. Recently, he acknowledged that a PSD-AUR government could form without his leadership if Siegfried Mureșan, the designated Prime Minister, fails to secure investiture votes.
In the latest parliamentary elections, PSD and AUR finished first and second, yet together they lack the 233 votes required for a parliamentary majority. Grindeanu believes a PSD-AUR government is "very likely," having discussed AUR's strategy with Simion.
Simion reportedly informed Grindeanu that AUR favors early elections over joining a government, a stance Grindeanu finds politically understandable. However, Grindeanu has not ruled out a coalition with AUR during the current mandate, provided AUR is ready to take on governance responsibilities.
Petrișor Peiu, leader of the AUR senators, has also expressed openness to collaboration with PSD, stating "anything is possible" while noting AUR's three non-negotiable demands. These discussions unfold as Mureșan seeks votes for a government involving PNL, USR, and UDMR, with PSD refusing to support any government it is not part of, and AUR declining to back Mureșan's proposed government.
