PSD Proposes Nazare as PM to Unblock Government Talks

The President of Romania is set to resume government discussions at Cotroceni following his return from the NATO summit in Ankara, where he will address Eastern Flank defense consolidation. The Social Democratic Party (PSD) has proposed Alexandru Nazare as Prime Minister in an attempt to resolve the ongoing political impasse.
Sorin Grindeanu, the leader of PSD, has agreed to Nazare's candidacy on the condition that PSD retains all portfolios from the Bolojan government. In this arrangement, PSD and UDMR would appoint political ministers, while PNL and USR ministerial positions could be occupied by technocrats.
The National Liberal Party (PNL) is considering supporting a government led by Nazare, though opinions within the party are divided. Some PNL leaders wish to appoint new ministers and continue in government alongside PSD, USR, and UDMR, while others suggest supporting the new government initially and then transitioning to the opposition to form a reformist alliance for the 2028 elections.
Most PNL leaders insist on a government rotation, proposing Siegfried Mureșan as Prime Minister first, with the expectation that he would serve with PSD backing until next summer. Afterward, PSD would assume the Prime Minister role with PNL support. However, disagreements persist regarding the rotation schedule. PSD insists on taking the Prime Minister position immediately, which PNL refuses, fearing that Grindeanu may not step down in the summer of 2027, one year before local and parliamentary elections.
PSD has offered to include the exact rotation terms in the government program, but this proposal was rejected by PNL and USR. "We made a program where PSD committed to support Bolojan until spring 2027, but removed him," stated a PNL Vice-President. Another Vice-President added, "We agree with rotation, but remain in office until June 2027."
Alexandru Nazare, currently the interim Finance Minister in the Bolojan government, is considered a potential leader for a mixed government with PSD and UDMR political ministers and technocratic slots for PNL and USR. Nazare has previously held the Finance portfolio in the Cîțu government from December 2020 to July 2021 and served as Transport Minister in the Ungureanu government. He was also a Member of the European Parliament for the PPE/PDL from December 2008 to July 2009 and has been affiliated with PDL since 2008, joining PNL in 2015.
Despite Grindeanu's reported agreement for Nazare to lead the government until the December 2028 parliamentary elections, the main obstacle remains PNL President Ilie Bolojan, who prefers Siegfried Mureșan as Prime Minister.
