Grindeanu Rejects Coalition with AUR Amid Political Standoff

Sorin Grindeanu, leader of PSD, declared that the party will not form a majority with AUR. He criticized PNL for frequently changing their conditions for government support. Despite PSD's openness to assume governance, PNL's evolving demands have led to a political deadlock. President Nicușor Dan emphasized that a transparent parliamentary majority is necessary for nominating a Prime Minister. Discussions for a potential 'armistice government' have been ongoing.

Grindeanu Rejects Coalition with AUR Amid Political Standoff

Sorin Grindeanu, leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), has firmly stated that the party will not enter into a coalition with the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR). Grindeanu's remarks come amid accusations that the National Liberal Party (PNL) has repeatedly altered its conditions for supporting the government, leading to a political impasse.

Grindeanu criticized PNL's approach, suggesting that their frequent changes in position have stalled progress. He asserted that PSD has maintained a consistent stance throughout the negotiations and remains willing to assume governance responsibilities. However, each time PSD appeared to agree, new conditions were introduced by PNL, Grindeanu claimed.

President Nicușor Dan emphasized the necessity of a transparent parliamentary majority for nominating a Prime Minister. Grindeanu echoed this sentiment, noting that no party has demonstrated a majority of 233 votes needed to form a government.

The PSD has been analyzing its participation in the government since December, with nearly 5,000 individuals voicing opposition to remaining in a coalition under Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, who currently leads with support from AUR, not PSD. Despite the political deadlock, PSD remains open to negotiations but will not accept all conditions presented.

Grindeanu has suggested that as a gesture of good faith, PNL should revoke its internal resolutions that exclude collaboration with PSD. He emphasized that compromising Romanian interests is not an option.

The discussions, which have spanned three days, have included considerations for a potential 'armistice government'. Yet, with 80% of Romanians believing the country is headed in the wrong direction, the urgency for a resolution is palpable.
