Germany is set to improve its military support for Ukraine by delivering IRIS-T air defense missiles in September, alongside several thousand attack drones, according to a German government source cited by t-online. This move comes in response to a recent drone incident at Leipzig/Halle airport. German authorities have attributed it to Russian involvement.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz reportedly played a key role in the decision to hold Russia responsible for the sabotage attempt at Leipzig, which occurred on August 4. The investigation revealed the presence of a drone, explosives, and detonators at the site, elements consistent with previous Russian hybrid operations, as reported by Tagesschau on September 1. The drone's objective was to disrupt the transportation of arms to Ukraine through Leipzig/Halle, a important logistics hub for aid to Kyiv.

Further complicating the situation, six explosive devices were discovered at a substation near Cologne. They caused a short circuit. Cologne police chief Michael Esser described the incident as "deliberate vandalism." Similar sabotage activities have been linked to Brandenburg, and an explosion at Augsburg train station injured two people.

In response to Germany's actions, Dmitry Medvedev, a prominent Russian political figure, dismissed the German accusations as fabricated and threatened direct attacks on German military factories. He also accused Western leaders of endorsing "state terrorism." Maria Zakharova from the Russian Foreign Ministry promised a response to Germany's increased military support for Ukraine.

Berlin's decision to strengthen military aid and prepare new sanctions against Moscow highlights the escalating tensions between the two nations. Germany also plans to strengthen intelligence cooperation with Ukraine. The government anticipates further hybrid attacks from Russia. As accusations fly between Berlin and Moscow, the geopolitical climate continues to deteriorate.
