UDMR's Csoma Botond confirms new PSD-led parliamentary majority
Csoma Botond of UDMR confirmed a new parliamentary majority led by PSD. The agreement includes AUR and SOS România and affects the Chamber of Deputies leadership. PNL and USR accused the agreement of violating prior arrangements and plan to contest it in court. UDMR did not sign the agreement but voted to retain its position.

Csoma Botond, leader of UDMR, confirmed on Wednesday that a new parliamentary majority has been established in Romania's Parliament, led by PSD and including parties AUR and SOS România. This agreement involves the redistribution of roles within the Chamber of Deputies' Permanent Bureau.
Botond stated that the new arrangement, which was signed by PSD, AUR, SOS România, and the National Minorities Group, has created a fresh majority in Parliament. He suggested that PSD's motive could be to secure votes for a future government investiture, although he clarified that this is his personal hypothesis. The initial agreement from December 2024 included PSD, PNL, USR, and UDMR and was supposed to regulate leadership roles for eight sessions. However, this new agreement, modified on Tuesday without UDMR's involvement, allocated two Secretary positions to AUR and SOS România. Ramona Bruynseels from AUR and Virginia Vedinaș from SOS were elected to these positions.
PNL and USR have accused the new agreement of violating the previous understanding. They subsequently left the parliamentary session.
They announced plans to boycott and challenge the decision at the Constitutional Court. Csoma Botond clarified that PNL and USR did not lose any functions, but the timing of the role allocations changed. Despite not signing the agreement, UDMR voted for the new composition of the Permanent Bureau to retain its quaestor function, a position it holds for all eight sessions. Botond expressed concern over the possibility of losing this function. "I felt that it was a situation where we could lose," he said.
Botond also highlighted potential future challenges. He noted that UDMR would find it difficult to support a government backed by AUR or SOS due to their stance against the Hungarian community. ".we would find ourselves with chauvinist extremists who hate the Hungarian community," Botond remarked, referring to AUR.
While UDMR's vote for any new government would depend on the Prime Minister, the program, and the majority parties, Botond rejected accusations from USR that UDMR has joined the new PSD-led majority.
