Trump Threatens Economic Sanctions as Middle East Tensions Escalate

US President Trump threatens economic penalties for countries aiding Iran. Israeli army launches probe into Hind Rajab's death, admitting potential errors. Israel criticized by UK over West Bank settlement expansion. Australia expresses outrage over lack of investigation into aid worker deaths.

Trump Threatens Economic Sanctions as Middle East Tensions Escalate

US President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning, threatening economic sanctions against any country that assists Iran. However, he did not specify which actions might trigger such penalties or identify any particular nations. The announcement comes amid heightened scrutiny over the Strait of Hormuz, which Trump declared open, in contrast to Iran's assertion that it remains closed.

In a separate development, the Israeli army has initiated an investigation into the death of Hind Rajab, a five-year-old Palestinian girl killed during a military operation in Gaza in 2024. The move suggests an acknowledgment of possible misconduct, as noted by Noga Tarnopolsky of FRANCE 24, who remarked on the tardiness of the probe. Rights organizations have expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of such investigations, citing a lack of consequential outcomes historically. Too little, too late.

The Israeli Defense Minister, Yisrael Katz, has criticized Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, accusing him of involving Turkey in perilous ventures in Syria. The accusation follows Israel's airstrike on a Syrian base near the Turkish border, which Israel claims was facilitating Turkish troop movements.

Diplomatic tensions have also flared between Israel and the United Kingdom, with Britain summoning Israel's charge d'affaires to protest against a major West Bank settlement project. The E1 settlement plan, approved by Israel last year, threatens to isolate East Jerusalem from the West Bank, a move condemned as an "existential threat" by the UN Secretary-General and "unacceptable and destructive" by British Foreign Minister Ed Miliband.

Australia has joined the chorus of international criticism. The country expressed outrage over Israel's decision not to criminally investigate the deaths of aid workers, including Australian Lalzawmi "Zomi" Frankcom, killed in an Israeli airstrike. Foreign Minister Penny Wong has called the decision, announced on World Humanitarian Day, particularly offensive. Australia's response includes plans to summon the Israeli ambassador, Hillel Newman, to address these concerns.

Despite these diplomatic upheavals, shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remained unchanged, with Kpler shiptracking data showing nine commodity vessels transiting the strait on Wednesday, consistent with previous days. Discussions regarding a potential US-Iran war continue to be at a standstill, reflecting the ongoing complexity of Middle Eastern geopolitics.
