Macron refutes CIA warning, strengthens defense in Saudi Arabia

French President Emmanuel Macron has denied claims from the Spanish newspaper El Mundo that the CIA alerted French authorities about potential Russian drone attacks. This denial aligns with France's move to reinforce its military presence in Saudi Arabia by deploying troops and defense systems to the Red Sea port city of Yanbu. Yanbu matters in energy transport and has previously been targeted by missile attacks from Yemen's Houthi rebels.

Macron voiced concern over the potential fallout from a U.S. Diesel export ban, calling it 'catastrophic.' He also flagged the risk of Russian attacks on French territory, noting Russia's escalating hostile actions towards European nations. Recently, Germany attributed a failed drone attack in Leipzig to Russian involvement.

In response to these threats, Macron has briefed French political leaders on the Russian threat and ordered the development of a plan to safeguard France's critical infrastructure. Moscow, however, denies any hybrid attacks on European countries, dismissing such allegations as unfounded.

Separately, France's decision to exempt Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov from European Union sanctions has stirred controversy. This exemption, justified on national security grounds, is perceived as undermining Macron's stance on Russia. Following the exemption, Azerbaijan pardoned a French spy, complicating the diplomatic field further.

Russia's actions are seen as efforts to intimidate European countries and weaken their support for Ukraine. Despite these tensions, Macron has assured that France has adequate gas and oil reserves to withstand the winter months.
