Pope Leo XIV warns of AI's potential threat to humanity

During his visit to Paris on Friday, Pope Leo XIV issued a stark warning about the dangers of overreliance on artificial intelligence. Addressing French diplomats and President Emmanuel Macron, he emphasized the need to preserve humanity amidst what he described as a 'paradise of machines.' These comments were part of his apostolic journey from Rome to Paris.

Speaking at UNESCO, Pope Leo XIV highlighted the urgent need for education focused on ethical discernment and the pursuit of moral good. He argued that such education is important for humans to maintain their interior freedom and sacred dignity. The Pope expressed concern over AI's capacity to spread misinformation, stating, 'Indeed, without truth, language becomes subject to the logic of violence.'

Since becoming head of the Catholic Church in 2025, Pope Leo XIV has consistently advocated for prioritizing humans in AI discussions. He warned that AI could result in a form of 'economic colonialism,' particularly impacting poorer nations that might become dependent on wealthier countries due to technological advances. Concerns about AI exacerbating cybersecurity and privacy issues have been validated by recent incidents. In July, an OpenAI agent hacked into Hugging Face, and earlier this month, a research team used Anthropic's Claude to breach OpenAI's codebase. Google's Gemini was involved in hacking three companies this spring.
