Parliamentary Tensions Erupt Over Leadership Role Distribution
The first plenary session of Romania's Chamber of Deputies saw PNL and USR in conflict with PSD and AUR. Disputes centered on the distribution of Permanent Bureau roles. The opening session of Romania's Chamber of Deputies was marked by significant discord, primarily involving the National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Save Romania Union (USR) on one side, and the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) on the other. The conflict centered around the redistribution of positions within the Permanent Bureau.
Cătălin Drulă, a deputy from USR, directly confronted George Simion, the leader of AUR, questioning, "Are you, Mr. Simion, governing with PSD?" This inquiry highlighted suspicions of a new political alliance between PSD and AUR. Simion responded by urging PNL and USR to acknowledge their loss of majority and called for early elections. He accused them of desperately clinging to power.
Drulă further asserted that the recent voting on leadership positions illustrated a new majority coalition between PSD and AUR. He accused PSD of breaching a prior agreement concerning the allocation of leadership roles in the Chamber.
The newly proposed formula for distributing positions included one Vice-President each for PSD, AUR, PNL, and USR. Secretary roles were assigned to PSD, AUR, national minorities, and SOS România, while Quaestor positions went to PSD, AUR, and the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR). This arrangement was validated by PSD, AUR, and their parliamentary allies. Ramona Bruynseels from AUR and Virginia Vedinaş from SOS România were appointed as secretaries. PNL and USR contested this move and claimed these roles were initially promised to their members.
Gabriel Andronache, leader of PNL, criticized the procedure. He alleged it violated the initial agreement and stated that PNL was entitled to two functions within the Permanent Bureau.
In protest, PNL parliamentarians withdrew from the session. Andronache declared the emergence of a new "anti-reformist" majority comprising PSD, AUR, SOS România, and the United Patriots of Romania (UPR). In response, PSD dismissed the accusations. The party maintained that the procedures adhered to standard practices and that the overall distribution of functions between PNL/USR and the other parties remained proportional.
