Țoiu Criticizes Dan Over Integrity Law Impacting Fritz

Oana Țoiu has publicly criticized President Nicușor Dan for his decision to promulgate the Integrity Law, which threatens the mandate of Timișoara Mayor Dominic Fritz. The law, enacted on Saturday, could lead to the termination of Fritz's mandate within the next 30 days unless legislative changes are made.

Țoiu believes that Parliament has the opportunity to adopt a new project proposed by the Save Romania Union (USR) that would not only meet the milestones of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) but also secure €770 million in funds. This project would amend the current law to remove the provision affecting Fritz.

"The President could have been a better ally for this direction," Țoiu stated, expressing her disappointment in Dan's approach. She argues that the law's retroactive application poses a constitutional challenge and sets a dangerous precedent by targeting political opponents. According to Țoiu, this discourages public officials from relying on neutral arbiters.

The Integrity Law mandates the termination of officials' mandates if past incompatibility or conflict of interest findings exist and the three-year term for sanctions has not yet expired. Dominic Fritz has acknowledged that his mandate will end without legislative intervention.

President Dan justified his decision to promulgate the law by highlighting the risk of losing PNRR funds. He indicated that he would have returned the law to Parliament if there had been more time. Additionally, Dan has requested Parliament to review the law's controversial provisions in the autumn session.

Țoiu has urged Parliament to act within the 30-day window to modify the law, which she describes as a "profound error." She emphasizes that the USR's proposed changes would uphold the rule of law and ensure the receipt of important PNRR funds.
