Dan's early election proposal stirs Romanian political field

Early elections are under consideration as a solution to Romania's escalating political tensions, with President Nicușor Dan at the center of the debate. The governing field appears increasingly unappealing due to deficit challenges and electoral risks, prompting some to view early elections as a dignified exit strategy.
The Social Democratic Party (PSD) has opted not to back Siegfried Mureșan for Prime Minister. Without PSD's support, Mureșan can gather only up to 170 votes, falling short of the 233 needed for a parliamentary majority.
Kelemen Hunor, leader of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR), prefers avoiding a chaotic parliamentary collapse. Hunor suggested that Mureșan should step down if he cannot secure enough backing. Despite this, Mureșan remains intent on a final parliamentary showdown.
A failed vote could lead to early elections, as per Article 89, Paragraph 1 of the Romanian Constitution. This allows President Dan to dissolve parliament if two Prime Minister nominations fail. However, the PSD and UDMR have much to lose from early elections. The PSD faces declining voter support and lacks charismatic leaders, while UDMR relies on PSD and the National Liberal Party (PNL) to surpass the 5% electoral threshold.
In contrast, the PNL and Save Romania Union (USR) see early elections as a chance to mobilize opposition against extremist parties. Meanwhile, the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) is polling at 35-40% and might frame itself as a political victim.
President Dan has publicly expressed reluctance for early elections, yet his passive stance has inadvertently boosted AUR and stabilized PSD. Since April, Dan has delayed political confrontations, preparing to deflect blame by claiming responsiveness to proposals. If Mureșan's nomination fails, Dan might shift responsibility to the PNL or take partial blame by dissolving parliament, seen as an honorable path.
Dan faces several options, including proposing a technocratic government to pass the budget, later blaming parties for any failures, or nominating a PSD candidate, suggesting covert political maneuvers. As a political mediator, Dan increasingly appears as a spectator, observing a crisis his inaction has deepened.
