Russia Threatens New Strikes on Ukraine's Energy Infrastructure

Russia has announced its intention to carry out extensive assaults on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. This announcement, made via Telegram by the Russian Defense Ministry, follows Ukrainian strikes on Russian installations. The Ministry justified the planned attacks as a response to these Ukrainian actions.

Moscow claimed responsibility for hitting an asbestos-cement plant in Kyiv, alleging that the facility stored explosives. Additionally, Moscow reported striking a drone and ammunition manufacturing site in Kyiv, following a previous attack that targeted an ammunition depot in the city. That earlier incident resulted in a massive explosion. Thirty-seven people died.

Ukraine, in a retaliatory move, targeted an oil refinery in northwest Russia with drones overnight. The attack caused a fire at the Russian facility, according to local authorities.

Last winter, Russia systematically targeted Ukraine's energy infrastructure, causing widespread damage and leaving millions of Ukrainians without electricity and heating. The announcement of future attacks is unusual for Russia, as such operations are rarely publicized in advance. Moscow typically maintains operational secrecy regarding planned military strikes, making this public declaration a departure from standard practice.

Both Russia and Ukraine have recently increased the frequency of long-range attacks. The targets have included depots, storage facilities, oil refineries, port infrastructure, and ships. The conflict escalates.
