Romania is set to allocate 3.7% of its GDP to defense and security in 2026, a significant move announced by President Nicușor Dan. This decision highlights Romania's commitment to strengthen its defense capabilities and assume greater responsibility for collective security in the Black Sea region and NATO's Eastern Flank.

Speaking at the NATO Summit in Ankara, President Dan highlighted Romania's dedication to strengthening transatlantic defense ties. 'We are working for a stronger, more capable transatlantic defense industry,' he stated, emphasizing the country's strategic role in regional stability. Romania has also joined the 'NATO Drone Edge' project, an initiative that facilitates joint drone acquisitions among Allied nations. This step aims to improve deterrence and prevent incidents, particularly in the Black Sea area, through collaboration with NATO allies. In addition to these efforts, Romania remains committed to supporting Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, while actively participating in the Bucharest Nine (B9) format to reinforce regional security and resilience.

The summit in Ankara addressed key topics such as defense capacity, military equipment, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte mentioned that Romania plans to further increase its defense spending to 3.5% of GDP by 2030. Romania's continued investment in defense is proof of its dedication to building and defending NATO's common space, ensuring that it remains a stabilizing force in Eastern Europe.
