Rogobete Criticizes Underfunding of Social Assistance in Romania

Alexandru Rogobete, a former Health Minister and social-democrat, has voiced concerns over Romania's underfunded social assistance system. In a Facebook post on Monday evening, Rogobete criticized the lack of public care and palliative centers, as well as inadequate services for vulnerable individuals across the country. He stressed that 'Romania will not get well through insults,' and warned against the idea of idolizing a 'single savior.'

Rogobete emphasized that Romania requires strong institutions, skilled professionals, and well-funded public policies to improve the social assistance sector. He argued that people must be prioritized over propaganda, and reality should take precedence over perception. Highlighting the dangers of relying on a single leader, he stated that democracy thrives on functioning institutions and collaborative teams.

During his tenure, Rogobete initiated the National Home Care Program and developed palliative care services. However, he noted that even the best programs cannot succeed without adequate funding. He criticized authorities for cutting budgets while lamenting the lack of services, and for blocking investments and hirings only to later seek scapegoats for failures.

Rogobete questioned how social assistance could function effectively with significant budget reductions. He pointed out that support for disabled individuals and related services has dwindled, leading to a dire need for staff, centers, and continuity of services. He asserted that slogans or social media posts are insufficient to aid vulnerable populations.

Rogobete called for serious public policies, investments, and predictable funding to address these issues. He urged political leaders to focus on the needs of vulnerable people rather than on image or propaganda. Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of understanding the human impact of budget cuts, asserting that political responsibility extends beyond legal investigations. The suffering of vulnerable individuals, he insisted, must not be used as a propaganda tool.
