PSD Proposes Options for New Government Formation
PSD leaders met in Sinaia to discuss government formation. They proposed two options: a minority government with Sorin Grindeanu as PM or a technocrat-led government. UDMR's support is important, with President Dan expected to designate Eugen Tomac as PM. PNL and USR refuse to back PSD ministers.
The leadership of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) convened on Sunday in Sinaia to deliberate on the formation of a new government. During the meeting, the PSD decided on two potential courses of action. The first option involves forming a minority government with Sorin Grindeanu as the Prime Minister. The second option considers the appointment of a technocrat as Prime Minister, provided that the individual is capable of forming a political government.

The PSD aims to secure a majority in parliament with the support of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR), minority groups, Victor Ponta's political faction, and conservative members of the National Liberal Party (PNL). PSD leaders anticipate that President Dan will nominate Eugen Tomac for the role of Prime Minister. Discussions during the meeting also addressed UDMR's stance in the government negotiations. Sorin Grindeanu reassured the party's branch leaders that UDMR's votes would be instrumental in establishing the new executive. The UDMR's votes are particularly important, as they did not participate in the censure motion against the previous Bolojan government and abstained from voting on the investiture of the Tomac and Veștea governments.
However, a month ago, UDMR expressed support for Siegfried Mureșan, although President Dan declined to nominate Mureșan as Prime Minister. The UDMR has indicated a willingness to back either Sorin Grindeanu or a technocrat as Prime Minister. Kelemen, the president of UDMR, has communicated to the PSD and PNL leaders that the UDMR is prepared to support any Prime Minister candidate.
Meanwhile, the National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Save Romania Union (USR) have announced their refusal to vote for any ministers proposed by the PSD, complicating the formation of a majority government. A potential majority could be achieved through the collaboration of PSD, UDMR, minority groups, and Victor Ponta's group.
President Dan is scheduled to convene with political parties this week to consult on the appointment of a new Prime Minister. Eugen Tomac is currently considered the leading candidate for the position.
