Liberty Galați steel mill auction fails again despite lower price
The auction for Liberty Galați steel mill failed again on June 19 despite a reduced price of EUR 463 million. Five bidders remained unchanged from the previous auction. Concordat administrators continue discussions with potential investors. Liberty Galați, Romania's largest industrial asset, has debts of EUR 1 billion. Legal complications arise from Liberty Ostrava's claims.

The auction for Liberty Galați, Romania's largest steel mill, ended unsuccessfully for the second time on Friday, June 19, despite the reduced asking price of EUR 463 million. This price marked a significant decrease from the initial EUR 709 million. Euro Insol and CITR, acting as concordat administrators, had engaged in discussions with potential investors and offered thorough access to information. Their extensive promotional efforts aimed to attract strategic investors globally, with a focus on markets such as the GCC, China, India, the USA, and Singapore.
Remus Borza, president of Euro Insol, stated, "We will continue dialogue with investors," highlighting the importance of the mill to thousands of individuals and the broader community. The auction saw participation from five companies: UMB Steel, Metinvest BV, Jindal Steel, Sidenor Steel, and JSW Steel. Notably, this list of registered bidders was identical to the one from the initial auction three months earlier.
Liberty Galați, known as Romania's largest integrated steel producer, entered preventive concordat proceedings in March 2025 due to accumulated debts of approximately EUR 1 billion. These proceedings aim to avert insolvency by allowing the company to restructure its debts. However, legal challenges have arisen as Liberty Ostrava, based in the Czech Republic, claims EUR 40 million from Galați. The Ostrava District Court has imposed a provisional measure prohibiting the transfer of Galați's assets, which has been recorded in the Romanian Land Register, adding a layer of legal complexity. This measure specifically targets the production and operational facilities in Galați.
