Anti-Bolojan liberals challenge PNL congress in court, seek damages
A faction of 16 liberal MPs filed a lawsuit against PNL leadership. The lawsuit seeks to suspend the upcoming PNL Extraordinary Congress. Plaintiffs demand 4 million lei in moral damages. The Ilfov Tribunal set a hearing for July 3. The lawsuit challenges recent decisions by PNL's BPN.

A group of anti-Bolojan liberals has initiated legal proceedings against the leadership of the National Liberal Party (PNL) at the Ilfov Tribunal. Filed on June 18, 2026, the lawsuit contests the organization of an Extraordinary Congress scheduled for June 21, 2026.
The plaintiffs, comprising 16 liberal Members of Parliament, have requested the suspension of two decisions made on June 17 by the PNL's National Political Bureau (BPN). These decisions involve the convening of an Extraordinary National Council and the subsequent congress. The Ilfov Tribunal has set a hearing for the case on July 3, 2026.
The MPs argue that the BPN overstepped its authority by convening the Extraordinary Congress, a responsibility they claim belongs solely to the National Council. The lawsuit accuses the BPN of violating statutory terms and creating a new body, the Extraordinary National Council, which is not recognized under the party's statute. The lawsuit states, "BPN convened the Extraordinary Congress, though this competence belongs exclusively to the National Council."
In addition to seeking the suspension of the BPN's decisions, the plaintiffs are demanding 4 million lei in moral damages, with each MP requesting 250,000 lei. They allege that the PNL leadership's actions aim to modify the party statute and eliminate dissenting members, a move they describe as a "delict of conscience," which they argue is prohibited by the party's statute, the Constitution, and the European Convention on Human Rights.
The lawsuit also highlights that the BPN imposed open voting, contrary to the requirement for secret ballots when voting on individuals. It further claims that the PNL leadership ignored a previous enforceable court ruling that had already suspended earlier BPN decisions numbered 22 and 25 of 2026. Despite the court's ruling, the PNL leadership publicly announced their intention to disregard it.
The MPs involved in the lawsuit include Monica Anisie, Andrei Baciu, Sorin Cîmpeanu, Mihai Culeafă, Alina Gorghiu, Ion Iordache, Aneta Matei, Ciprian Pandea, Nicoleta Pauliuc, Alexandru Popa, Răzvan Prișcă, George Scarlat, Ionuț Stroe, Mihail Veștea, Sebastian Mihai Rusu, and Eduard Tatian Mititelu.
Background to the dispute includes a series of decisions by the PNL's BPN on June 15, 2026, where they voted against supporting a PSD government and a government led by Mihail Veștea. The BPN also decided that any MPs voting in favor of the Veștea Government would lose their party membership.
The legal battle is part of an ongoing conflict within the PNL, as the anti-Bolojan faction seeks to challenge what they perceive as overreach and disregard for party statutes by the current leadership.
