On June 18, 2026, the Ilfov Tribunal provisionally suspended decisions by the National Liberal Party (PNL) that threatened to exclude members of parliament who voted in favor of the Veștea government. This ruling, which is immediately enforceable, comes as a significant development in the ongoing political dispute within the party.
The court admitted a request from several PNL members who challenged the party's recent decisions. Specifically, the tribunal suspended PNL Decisions No. 22 and 25, which were adopted on June 15, 2026. These decisions had stipulated that any MPs supporting the government led by Adrian Veștea would lose their party membership. A direct confrontation with constitutional principles.
The legal challenge was initiated by a group of liberal MPs, including notable figures such as Monica Anisie, Alina Gorghiu, Andrei Baciu, and Sorin Cîmpeanu. They argued that the PNL's measures violated their constitutional mandate, citing Article 69 of the Constitution, which guarantees the freedom of parliamentary vote. The MPs contend that the PNL leadership's actions lacked the necessary statutory competence. Each parliamentarian faced potential expulsion simply for exercising their constitutional right to vote according to their conscience, a fundamental principle in any democratic system.
In addition to seeking the suspension of the PNL's decisions, 18 MPs are also pursuing moral damages from the party. Each MP is requesting 250,000 lei. The total sum amounts to nearly 4.5 million lei.
The court's decision represents a victory for the faction within the PNL that opposes Ilie Bolojan, who has been a prominent figure in the party's leadership. The ruling can be appealed within five days, leaving the final outcome pending. Nonetheless, the immediate suspension of these decisions marks a key moment in the internal conflict over support for the Veștea government.
