AI Fakes Cloud Iran's Farewell to Khamenei
Iran held a funeral for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran, drawing large crowds. AI-generated videos and images falsely depicted the event, spreading widely online. Some fakes exaggerated crowd sizes or altered landmarks. OpenAI's SynthID helped identify AI content. Misleading media often included nonsensical text or unrealistic elements.

In the heart of Tehran, throngs of mourners gathered to pay their final respects to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's former Supreme Leader. The funeral procession was marked by dense crowds, as documented by international media. However, the solemnity of the event was overshadowed by a surge of AI-generated content that spread across social media platforms, falsely representing the day's proceedings.
Among the misleading content, several AI-manipulated videos and images claimed to show exaggerated scenes from the funeral. One such video, which went viral, purported to depict the 'largest funeral in history,' yet upon closer inspection, the Persian text within was mere gibberish. The mosque featured in this footage erroneously displayed a white dome, whereas the actual mosque is known for its iconic blue dome.
Another deceptive image circulated online, showing massive crowds near Tehran's Azadi Tower. This image was identified as AI-generated through OpenAI's SynthID watermark, revealing geographical inconsistencies such as incorrect tree placements. Similarly, a separate AI video portrayed millions of mourners carrying Khamenei's coffin, but was riddled with tell-tale AI artifacts like distorted hands and unrealistic movement.
The phenomenon of AI fakes is not new; misleading media frequently includes outdated footage or images taken out of context. In the case of Khamenei's funeral, much of the misinformation was synthetic, as detailed in Vedika Bahl's analysis in 'Truth or Fake.' These AI-generated distortions not only misinform the public but also undermine the authenticity of real-world events.
