Germany Accuses Russia Over Leipzig Drone Incident

Germany has formally accused Russia of being behind a drone incident at Leipzig airport, where an explosive device was discovered near Ukrainian cargo planes on August 4. The drone failed to detonate due to a malfunctioning detonator. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt remarked that the attack aligns with a 'well-established pattern of Russian hybrid operations in Europe.'

An analysis of the equipment and intelligence reports confirmed Russia's involvement, according to German authorities. In response, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and the termination of the Russian House contract in Berlin. Additionally, Germany plans to implement stricter controls on Russian citizens and increase pressure on the Russian fleet to prevent evasion of Western sanctions.

The Russian Ambassador to Germany, Sergey Nechaev, has been summoned by the German Foreign Ministry. In response to Germany's measures, Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that Russia will respond 'symmetrically.'

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte expressed solidarity with Germany, affirming that the 'evidence is clear' regarding Russian involvement. The EU Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, has also announced new sanctions against Russia.

Despite these accusations, Russia has consistently denied any involvement in the drone incident. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that 'Germany is under threat,' emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
