Dominic Fritz Reconfirmed as USR Leader Despite CCR Ruling

Dominic Fritz is reconfirmed as the leader of USR by a unanimous party vote. This decision comes amid a CCR ruling that could end his term as Timișoara's mayor. The CCR declared an integrity law amendment constitutional, which affects officials in conflict of interest. The USR party stands against what it perceives as political manipulation by PSD-AUR. Fritz's conflict of interest was upheld by the High Court in June.

Dominic Fritz has been reconfirmed as the leader of the USR party following a unanimous vote by the Political Committee, despite a recent ruling by the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) that could terminate his mandate as the mayor of Timișoara. The decision, made on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, saw 151 members in attendance.

The CCR ruled that an amendment to the integrity law, which could lead to Fritz losing his mayoral position within 30 days, is constitutional. This amendment, requested by the Social Democratic Party (PSD), mandates that officials found in definitive conflict of interest lose their office. The High Court had declared Fritz in conflict of interest in June, upholding a decision by the National Integrity Agency (ANI) from 2024.

In response, the USR party has expressed strong support for Fritz. "USR unequivocally reaffirms political support for Dominic Fritz," the party stated. They criticized the CCR's ruling, saying, "The PSD majority in CCR cannot change Timișoara citizens' vote." The party also condemned retroactive legal changes, stating, "Retroactive laws violate a key constitutional principle protecting citizens" and warned against setting a "dangerous precedent" by targeting opponents.

The USR has vowed to resist what it describes as pressures from the PSD-AUR coalition, asserting, "USR opposes undemocratic regime based on abuse of power." The CCR's ruling reinforces that sanctioning conflict of interest is within the legislature's authority, according to the court.

The constitutional context involves Article 15(2), which states laws apply prospectively except for favorable penal laws. As the situation develops, Dominic Fritz's political future as Timișoara's mayor remains uncertain, but his position within the USR appears solidified.
