Romanian Senate backs mandatory school uniforms bill

The Romanian Senate has approved a bill requiring school uniforms for students in state pre-university education. The vote, conducted on Monday, September 21, resulted in 84 senators supporting the measure, 18 opposing, and 4 abstaining, as reported by News.ro. Initiated by the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the legislation modifies the current pre-university education law and now moves to the Chamber of Deputies for final consideration.

Local school communities will have the authority to choose uniform designs, which must comply with regulated models and technical standards. Schools are prohibited from demanding attire beyond the approved uniform, except for a badge displaying the institution's name. Uniforms will be provided either free or at a subsidized cost, with funding options including county or local councils or external contributors.

The bill aims to prevent commercial monopolies on uniform supply, ensuring equitable access for all students. Supporters argue that mandatory uniforms will help mask students' financial differences and reduce bullying related to clothing. The bill's proponents also claim that standard uniforms will assist security personnel and teachers in identifying students from their respective schools.

The introduction of uniforms is anticipated to improve students' sense of belonging and shift attention from personal appearance to academic focus. As the legislative process advances, the Chamber of Deputies will now evaluate the proposal before it can be enacted into law.
