Cristian Ghinea, leader of the Save Romania Union (USR), has launched a sharp critique against Nicușor Dan, predicting that the Social Democratic Party (PSD) will soon politically abandon him. Ghinea, reflecting on Dan's recent challenges, stated, " they will throw him overboard very soon." Ghinea argues that Dan's political support from PSD, intelligence services, and Lia Savonea has diminished after they have "compromised" him.
The Integrity Law, which has recently sparked controversy, may result in the termination of Dominic Fritz's mandate as mayor of Timișoara. Ghinea cites this situation as damaging to Dan's relationship with voters. In Timișoara, protesters have expressed their discontent by chanting "Nicușor traitor!" in response to Dan's perceived stance on the matter.
Dominic Fritz, who is also the president of USR, recently lost a conflict of interest case, adding to the political tension surrounding the Integrity Law. This legislation threatens to affect Fritz's position as mayor, a development that Ghinea believes has further strained Dan's voter connections.
Despite the current situation, Ghinea speculates that USR might eventually defend Dan against PSD. He also claims that PSD and the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) hold significant influence within the government. Ghinea and Dan have a history of tension, dating back to when Dan was the leader of USR. Their relationship has been marked by disagreements, with Ghinea once calling Dan an "idiot" and accusing him of antisemitism in past conflicts.
