Romania's new school year starts amid rural education challenges

Romania's 2026-2027 school year kicks off on September 7, initiating an academic calendar that stretches until August 31, 2027. This year, the calendar comprises 36 weeks, divided into five modules with five holiday breaks.

Schools nationwide are gearing up for opening day ceremonies, ensuring parental access is arranged. The initial module will last until October 23, with a break on October 5 for International Teachers’ Day. An autumn holiday is slated from October 24 to November 1, after which the second module will begin on November 2 and end on December 22.

From December 23, 2026, to January 10, 2027, the winter break takes place, followed by the third module starting January 11. The module's end date varies by county, as local inspectorates may choose a one-week holiday between February 15 and March 7. Classes continue until April 23, leading to a spring holiday from April 24 to May 4. The final module runs from May 5 to June 18, with summer holidays beginning June 19 for most students.

Graduating high school students will finish on June 4, completing 34 weeks, while eighth graders end on June 11 after 35 weeks. Vocational students will extend their studies until June 25.

This academic year introduces a new curriculum for ninth graders, part of ongoing educational reforms. However, access to education, especially in rural areas, remains a concern. Data from the Education Ministry and Monitorul Social reveal that 75.2% of those aged 3 to 23 were enrolled in education during the 2024-2025 school year. Despite a high gross preschool enrollment rate of 86.3% in 2025, urban areas showed a 98.4% enrollment rate, sharply contrasting with the 74% in rural regions.

The disparity is stark among three-year-olds, with only 60.2% enrolled in rural preschools. Primary education enrollment also highlights this gap, with urban areas achieving a 98.5% rate compared to 71.5% in rural zones. Lower-secondary enrollment mirrors this trend, with 96% of urban students enrolled versus 65.6% in rural areas, marking the widest gap in five years.
