Hațeg Geopark unveils new projects at European conference
Hațeg Country UNESCO International Geopark was represented at the 18th European Geoparks Network Conference in Finland from September 16 to 18, 2026. The event gathered over 250 participants from Europe and beyond. Hațeg Geopark team members showed projects involving schools and communities. Romania's National Geoparks Network had a joint stand at the Geoparks Fair, highlighting several regional projects. A collaboration agreement was signed by Danube GeoTour Plus project partners, emphasizing community involvement and tourist monitoring.
The Hațeg Country UNESCO International Geopark took center stage at the 18th European Geoparks Network (EGN) Conference, hosted from September 16 to 18, 2026, at the Saimaa UNESCO International Geopark in Finland. This gathering drew over 250 representatives from across the globe, encouraging a active exchange of ideas and collaborations within the global geopark community.
Cristian Ciobanu, the coordinator of the Hațeg Geopark and vice-coordinator of the EGN, participated alongside team members Adina Popa and Dan Popa. This conference, the first under new leadership, was a platform for launching fresh initiatives and establishing new partnerships.
During the conference, the Hațeg Geopark team showed several projects involving schools, local communities, and other stakeholders. These initiatives reflect the Geopark's dedication to sustainable development and the preservation of local heritage, including the region's notable dinosaur fossils like the Hatzegopteryx.
Romania's National Geoparks Network, featuring the Hațeg Geopark, had a joint stand at the Geoparks Fair. This display highlighted projects from regions like Ținutul Buzăului, Oltenia de sub Munte, Carpaterra, Gutâi-Maramureș, and Dobrogea Chimerică, with publications and artifacts showing Romania's rich and diverse heritage.
A key outcome of the conference was the signing of a collaboration agreement by partners of the Danube GeoTour Plus project. This agreement aims to boost community involvement, improve visitor experiences, and implement tourist monitoring strategies. It highlights the importance of exchanging experiences and joint promotional efforts, with partners committing to annual meetings for progress evaluation and future planning.
The conference concluded with accolades for individuals and organizations contributing to the EGN's 25-year journey. Newly admitted members of the Global Geoparks Network and revalidated European geoparks received congratulations. The event featured short film and photography competitions, with winners announced during the closing ceremony.
The University of Bucharest matters in linking the Hațeg Geopark to the EGN, managing its UNESCO status, and supporting its mission to promote sustainable development and celebrate local heritage.
