UDMR Withholds Support Without Siegfried Mureșan as PM

Csoma Botond of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) announced on Tuesday that the party would not participate in the government if Siegfried Mureșan is not appointed as prime minister. Mureșan is the joint candidate proposed by the National Liberal Party (PNL), Save Romania Union (USR), and UDMR.

UDMR has not finalized its decision. Botond emphasized that the party would reconvene to discuss its position if the President nominates someone else for the premiership. Romania has been without a government for four months. This creates a sense of urgency for a resolution.

Botond also clarified that UDMR would not support a government that includes the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR). The party rules out any parliamentary majority involving them. This stance is firm against a formal alliance, although individual politicians may change parties.

Botond expressed reservations about Eugen Tomac as a potential prime minister, citing his previous unsuccessful attempt to form a majority government, which led to his resignation. A prime minister with political backing is preferable to an independent. The latter might lack authority during times of political tension.

Regarding Sorin Grindeanu as a potential candidate for prime minister, Botond avoided giving a definitive answer.
