Ciurila Teacher Sentenced to 10 Months for Student Abuse

The Turda Court has sentenced a teacher from Ciurila to 10 months of imprisonment for abusive conduct towards students. This verdict, issued on August 28, 2026, is not yet final, as the decision can be appealed within 10 days. The court has postponed the application of the sentence, setting a two-year supervision period for the teacher.

The teacher's initial sentence of eight months was increased by two months, resulting in a total of 10 months. During the supervision term, which will begin once the decision is finalized, the teacher must report to the Cluj Probation Service and accept visits from a designated counselor. Additionally, the teacher is required to report any changes in residence, employment, or travel plans.

As part of the ruling, the teacher must perform 40 days of unpaid community service, which can be completed at either the Ciurila or Turda City Hall. The court emphasized that the postponement of the sentence could be revoked if the teacher commits new offenses during the supervision period.

The court acquitted the teacher of accusations related to using insulting expressions and alleged violence against two students, stating that the acts of violence did not fall under criminal law. However, the teacher received a three-month sentence for verbal abuse against one student.

In addition to the criminal penalties, the Turda Court partially granted civil actions, ordering the teacher to pay 15,000 lei in moral damages. Another civil action remains unresolved. The teacher is also required to pay 1,400 lei to the state to cover court costs.

The case, which became public in May 2025, involved accusations of the teacher pulling a student's hair and throwing a student onto a chair during an activity related to the "Green Week" program. The investigation was later expanded to include other alleged abuses against students, as reported by TurdaNews.

While the judicial control measure is maintained from August 28, the pre-trial detention periods will be deducted from the sentence. The teacher retains the presumption of innocence until the verdict is finalized.
