Romanian women face delayed retirement from July 2026
Starting July 2026, women in Romania will see a new retirement age of 62 years and 7 months. This change affects specific generations and is part of a gradual shift towards equalizing retirement ages for both genders. By 2035, the standard retirement age will be 65 for all. Cristiana Dumitrescu of the Bucharest Pension House clarifies that not all women are affected.

Women in Romania will face a new retirement age of 62 years and 7 months starting in July 2026, according to Law no. 360/2023. This represents a one-month increase from earlier in the year and is part of a broader plan to gradually equalize retirement ages for both genders. The change will affect only certain generations, as the retirement date is determined by an individual's birth month and year.
Cristiana Dumitrescu, Executive Director of the Bucharest Pension House, emphasized that this increase does not apply to all women. "This increase does not mean retirement age rises for all women," Dumitrescu noted, highlighting the selective nature of the policy.
The process of equalizing the retirement age is set to continue until 2035, when the standard retirement age will be 65 for both men and women. This change is part of a detailed plan outlined in Annex no. 5 of the law, which provides a staggered schedule for the transition.
Currently, individuals can receive only one category of pension, and this stipulation remains unchanged. The gradual adjustment aims to ensure that the retirement age aligns with the evolving demographic and economic field.
