Heatwave warning issued for western Romania as temperatures soar

Romania is preparing for its first major heatwave of the summer, with meteorologists issuing warnings as temperatures are set to rise significantly. The National Meteorological Administration has announced a Yellow Code warning effective from Saturday, June 20, between 12:00 and 21:00.

The heat warning, which is valid from June 19 to June 22, covers several regions including Crișana, Banat, Maramureș, and parts of western and central Transylvania. During this period, temperatures are expected to climb to dangerous levels, particularly in the western and southwestern parts of the country. On Friday, temperatures are predicted to range from 24-25°C along the coast, increasing up to 32°C in the west and southwest. However, by Sunday and Monday, these regions could experience temperatures soaring to between 34-36°C. Meteorologists have highlighted the potential for significant thermal discomfort, with the temperature-humidity index (ITU) potentially reaching a critical level of 80 units.

This index matters. It is a key indicator of how the human body experiences heat, and reaching this threshold can signal severe discomfort.

The Yellow Code warning will extend into Sunday, June 21, reflecting the continued rise in temperatures and the onset of a heatwave. Maximum temperatures on Saturday are expected to be between 30-34°C, with the hottest conditions anticipated in the Western Plain.

Residents in the affected areas, including Cluj-Napoca and surrounding counties, are advised to take precautions. It is recommended to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, particularly between 11:00 and 18:00, and to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Additionally, avoiding intense physical activities during peak heat hours is advised to minimize the risk of heat-related illnesses. In western and southwestern Romania, the ITU is anticipated to reach or slightly exceed 80 units, according to authorities who are urging the public to remain vigilant and to follow safety guidelines to cope with the extreme temperatures.
