Oradea Court Sentences Man for Threatening Prosecutor

A 41-year-old man was sentenced on Tuesday by the Oradea Court to two years and three months in prison for threatening a prosecutor. The man, identified as Nagy Karoly Levente, had previously threatened to stab the prosecutor upon his release from prison. This sentence adds to an existing imprisonment for threatening three police officers, bringing his total sentence to four years, two months, and 16 days.

The threats were made on February 15, 2022, following the rejection of Nagy's parole request. At that time, he was serving a sentence for qualified theft and destruction. During a hearing by the Oradea prison's disciplinary committee, Nagy threatened Prosecutor I.C. and a prison officer, also stating he would commit suicide after his release.

Nagy's threats were described as "firm and repetitive" according to the court ruling. He reportedly confirmed his intent to fatally stab the prosecutor, saying, "If I say so, it will be so!" The prosecutor had previously proposed his preventive arrest and prosecution in cases related to theft and destruction, which Nagy had also threatened her over while in prison.

After his release on May 1, 2023, Nagy contacted the Prosecutor's Office to inquire about the prosecutor's whereabouts, reinforcing the seriousness of his threats. His behavior during the trial was disruptive; he interrupted witness hearings and insulted medical and judicial staff, resulting in a 2,500 lei fine.

Despite claiming schizophrenia as an excuse and arguing that the prosecutor was never in direct danger, Nagy showed no remorse in his final statement, declaring, "This is how I grew up, and this is how I will die." The judges noted his persistent defiance of authority and high criminal persistence, emphasizing the gravity of his threats.

Earlier this year, Nagy was definitively convicted for another incident where he threatened three railway police officers who had detained him for causing a scandal. As part of the current ruling, Nagy received a five-year communication ban with the prosecutor and must maintain a distance of at least 50 meters from her, although the court refused to specify a distance from her home to protect her address. Additionally, Nagy must pay 1,500 lei in court costs, while the victim did not seek damages.
