Romania advances talks with Serbia on new Iron Gates hydropower plant

On June 18, the Romanian government authorized the negotiation and signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Serbia concerning the proposed Djerdap 3 hydropower plant. This move in advancing regional energy cooperation between the two countries.

The MoU is designed to facilitate the exchange of information and encourage collaboration among involved institutions and companies. The Romanian government emphasized that the project must safeguard the interests of both nations and ensure that the operations of the existing Iron Gates I and II facilities remain unaffected. Additionally, it is important that the new development does not interfere with the FAST DANUBE II program, which is overseen by the Romanian and Bulgarian transport ministries and implemented by AFDJ Galați and IAPPD Ruse.

The project, described as a strategic investment for energy storage, aims to support the integration of renewable power generation in the region. It is necessary that authorities conduct a thorough assessment of downstream conditions below Iron Gates II, considering the potential effects on riverbanks in both Romania and Bulgaria, as well as implications for Danube navigation.

The US Embassy in Serbia has extended an invitation to companies to engage in the project, highlighting its international significance. Serbian Minister Dubravka Đedović Handanović had previously mentioned the MoU in discussions with then-Romanian Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan in August 2025, expressing the intent to finalize the agreement "as soon as possible."

Ilie-Gavril Bolojan, Romania's interim Prime Minister and acting Energy Minister, has been appointed to negotiate and sign the agreement. The Djerdap 3 project is viewed as a key strategic asset for the region, reinforcing the commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
