Dan names Veștea as PM nominee after Tomac resigns

Nicușor Dan announced Adrian Veștea as the new Prime Minister nominee after Eugen Tomac's resignation. Dan's decision comes amid political maneuvering involving PSD and PNL factions. Veștea, a PNL politician and former Minister of Development, is known for his pro-Western stance and development achievements. The announcement prompts questions about the future coalition government and the implications for state reform.

Dan names Veștea as PM nominee after Tomac resigns

President Nicușor Dan designated Adrian Veștea as Prime Minister nominee on Sunday morning, hours after Eugen Tomac withdrew his candidacy, a move that aligns Dan with a PNL faction historically tied to corruption and advances PSD's strategy to fracture the Liberal party.

"Mr. Eugen Tomac relinquished his mandate this morning and, under these circumstances, I designate Mr. Adrian Veștea as Prime Minister," Dan told reporters at the Cotroceni Palace. He thanked Tomac for his seriousness and responsibility, noting that "neither Mr. Tomac nor I were playing games with governance."

Veștea, a National Liberal Party (PNL) politician who previously served as the head of the Brașov County Council and as development minister, has a track record of drawing down European funds and managing major infrastructure developments, including the Brașov airport. Reports from Biz Brașov indicated that Veștea had been lined up for the premiership and holds a resolute pro-Western stance.

The nomination comes in the wake of a May 5 no-confidence motion brought by the PSD and AUR against the sitting government. According to political sources, Dan's selection strengthens the hand of the PNL faction led by Hubert Thuma, which had been in intense negotiations with the PSD to dismantle Ilie Bolojan's leadership.

"We pursued this path following consultations with political parties," Dan stated. "At this moment, however, it is clear that a political solution is the right way forward."

However, the president is contradicted by a report from the publication Biz Brașov. Writing on April 30, five days before the no-confidence motion, it stated that the Thuma faction was negotiating intensely with the PSD to "topple" the Bolojan Government in the upcoming vote, and that they were positioning Adrian Veștea—president of the Brașov County Council and first vice-president of the PNL—to become Romania's next prime minister under a future PSD-PNL-UDMR coalition.

As the vote on the new government approaches, the National Liberal Party must decide whether to reject this political maneuver, which threatens to compromise not only the prospect of state reform, but the party itself. Ilie Bolojan will either keep the party aligned behind him or form a new liberal pole to contest the 2028 elections. Meanwhile, if the Thuma faction succeeds in internally imposing its vision of continued collaboration with the PSD, it risks being left out of parliament entirely in 2028.

The full speech of the President of Romania:

"Mr. Eugen Tomac relinquished his mandate this morning and, under these circumstances, I designate Mr. Adrian Veștea as Prime Minister. Mr. Adrian Veștea has risen through every administrative tier—he has been a successful mayor, a successful county council president, and a successful minister. He is someone who has secured European funds and is deeply committed to development; for example, he developed the Brașov Airport, which is a clear success. He is resolutely pro-Western, a man of values, a man of dialogue, and last but not least, someone who has long worked with budgets and understands budgetary responsibility.

Therefore, I am convinced he will successfully fulfill this duty. I want to thank Eugen Tomac for his seriousness, commitment, and responsibility. I also want to stress that neither Mr. Tomac nor I were playing games with governance. We pursued this path following consultations with political parties. At this moment, however, it is clear that a political solution is the right way forward. Furthermore, I want to thank everyone who was prepared to join the Cabinet—individuals with solid backgrounds who had the courage to step away from their professional careers to serve the public in a Romanian Government, people we knew we could rely on and whom our society truly needs."
