Deepening Rift in Bucharest: Liberal Leader Blasts President’s PM Nomination as a ‘Hostile Act’ Aimed at Fracturing the Party for the PSD’s Benefit

Ilie Bolojan, president of the Partidul Național Liberal, condemned President Nicușor Dan's nomination of Adrian Veștea as prime minister on Thursday, calling the move a hostile act and an evident attempt to fracture his party.
Bolojan wrote in a social media post neither he nor the PNL leadership received advance notice of the decision. He described it as a continuation of a strategy he said began with the government's collapse, orchestrated to benefit the Partidul Social Democrat.
"Am luat act de faptul că președintele Nicușor Dan l-a desemnat pentru funcția de prim-ministru pe domnul Adrian Veștea," Bolojan said. "Nici conducerea PNL și nici eu, personal, nu am fost informați anterior de președinte în privința acestei decizii, un act ostil, o evidentă încercare de rupere a PNL, intenție intuită încă de la doborârea guvernului în interesul PSD."
The PNL president announced an urgent meeting of the party's National Political Bureau to formulate an official response. Bolojan leads a reformist faction within the party that has opposed any coalition with the social democrats.
"Încercarea de a impune unui partid un premier din rândurile sale, fără a avea măcar o consultare prealabilă și după toate deciziile luate în unanimitate de forurile partidului, încalcă orice principiu de colaborare politică loială," Bolojan added, according to a statement released by the party.
The nomination follows a no-confidence motion filed by PSD and Alianța pentru Unirea Românilor against the previous government. Bolojan's group has interpreted Nicușor Dan's decision as abandoning a mediator role in favor of direct involvement in what they characterize as a palace maneuver.
Hubert Thuma, leader of an internal PNL faction, has been identified as attempting to align the party with a new left-wing majority. The reformist core views the presidential nomination as confirming suspicions that emerged during the government's downfall.
The National Political Bureau meeting will determine whether PNL accepts the nomination or breaks with the presidential line. Bolojan framed the choice as one between capitulation to a new political alignment and isolation of what he termed a rebellious faction.
PSD has not commented on Bolojan's statement. The party's strategy in the current power struggle remains unclear, though its no-confidence motion signaled intent to reshape the governing coalition.
The meeting is scheduled for the coming days. No date has been announced.
