Romania Cuts Diesel Excise by 25% for Early September

Romania's Ministry of Finance will reduce diesel excise by 25% from September 1-15, 2026. This temporary measure aims to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices. The excise cut follows a reevaluation of the fuel market and increases from an initial 20% reduction in August. The intervention is designed to protect purchasing power and economic stability. The Competition Council confirms that the excise reduction will be reflected in diesel prices.

Romania Cuts Diesel Excise by 25% for Early September

The Ministry of Finance in Romania has announced a 25% reduction in diesel excise duty, effective from September 1 to 15, 2026. The temporary measure is intended to ease the fiscal pressure on fuel prices, which have been rising sharply. Alexandru Nazare, a representative from the ministry, described the move as a 'temporary, calibrated intervention to reduce fiscal pressure.'

The excise reduction, which increases from a previous 20% cut in August, is part of a strategy to address the escalating fuel pump prices and international market fluctuations. The new adjustment means the excise is reduced by 701.07 lei per 1,000 liters. The effective excise rate becomes 2,103.22 lei per 1,000 liters for the first half of September.

The decision follows a reevaluation of the diesel market situation, where Platts diesel quotes have surged by 45.65%, and the average standard price variation has risen by 25.45%. These figures necessitated a 25% reduction from the fiscal code base to stabilize prices.

The measure is designed to protect Romanian purchasing power and maintain economic stability, particularly affecting sectors such as transport, logistics, and consumer goods. The Ministry of Finance will continue to monitor and recalibrate the excise based on market trends, in accordance with Law 162/2026, which mandates a reevaluation every two weeks.

Major fuel operators have adhered to the capped commercial margins.

The Competition Council has confirmed that the excise reduction will be reflected in diesel prices. The approach aims to limit the chain reaction of rising costs across various sectors.
