Dacia registered 2,132 new units in Romania in May 2026, maintaining its position as the country's best-selling car brand, preliminary data from the Association of Automobile Manufacturers and Importers showed. The Duster led with 979 units. The Logan accounted for 436 registrations, while the Bigster model reached 396 units.
New car registrations rose 7% in May 2026 compared to the same month in 2025. The increase marks a reversal from broader market trends — total registrations fell 10% in the first five months of 2026 against the same period last year. Toyota placed second with 1,139 units registered in May 2026.
Skoda came third with 910 units. Volkswagen registered 811 new cars during the month. The Toyota Corolla was the Japanese brand's top seller with 445 units.
Skoda's Octavia model accounted for 379 of the brand's May registrations. Purely electric car sales jumped 88% in May 2026 compared to May 2025. A total of 797 electric units were registered during the month.
Electrified car registrations, including hybrid models, increased 32% year-on-year, data centralized by DGPCI showed. The May figures contrast with the 10% decline recorded across the first five months of 2026. Dacia's performance in May reinforced the brand's traditional strength in the Romanian market.
Electric and hybrid vehicles showed the sharpest growth among all segments. Manufacturers have expanded their electrified model offerings to meet regulatory requirements and shifting buyer preferences. The 88% surge in purely electric registrations reflects accelerated adoption, though from a smaller base than conventional vehicles.
Toyota's 1,139 units placed it well ahead of Skoda's 910 registrations. Volkswagen's 811 units kept the German brand among the top sellers. The Corolla's 445 units made it the second most-registered individual model after the Duster.
The 7% monthly increase in May offered a counterpoint to the year-to-date contraction. Whether the uptick signals a sustained recovery or represents seasonal variation will depend on figures from subsequent months. The 10% drop in the January-May period indicates headwinds remain.
Dacia's 2,132 registrations in May 2026 nearly doubled Toyota's total and more than doubled Skoda's. The Duster alone outsold any single competing brand except Toyota. The Logan and Bigster together added 832 units to Dacia's May performance.
Electrified vehicles' 32% growth rate outpaced the overall market's 7% monthly increase. The 797 purely electric registrations in May represented a segment gaining traction, though still a fraction of total sales. Hybrid models contributed to the broader electrified category's expansion.
APIA released the preliminary May data. DGPCI centralized the electrified vehicle statistics. The two datasets provide a view of a market where traditional brands maintain dominance while alternative powertrains grow from smaller bases.
