Cluj-Napoca to allocate record funding for sports and cultural projects
Cluj-Napoca Local Council will debate funding allocations for NGOs and associations on June 9, 2026. The council plans to approve 14,000,000 lei for FC Universitatea Cluj, marking a record allocation, and allocate substantial funds for other sports and cultural projects.

Cluj-Napoca Local Council is set to debate funding allocations on Tuesday, June 9, focusing on non-reimbursable funding for NGOs and associations. The funding targets sports, cultural, and social associations in Cluj for 2026, with a total of 14,000,000 lei earmarked for FC Universitatea Cluj. The City Hall of Cluj-Napoca has allocated over 8,000,000 euros for sports and cultural projects for the year.
Of this, FC Universitatea Cluj will receive approximately 3,000,000 euros, a record allocation for the club. This funding supports various activities, including sports training and player promotion, as well as national team promotion and participation in international competitions. FC Universitatea Cluj initially requested 15,000,000 lei but was granted 14,000,000 lei, surpassing the 13,300,000 lei received in 2025.
The funding decision follows the analysis and selection commission's meeting at the end of May, which found the club's application both eligible and timely. In addition to FC Universitatea Cluj, Clubul Sportiv Universitatea will receive 8,000,000 lei for its sports activities, while Clubul Sportiv CFR Cluj is set to receive 135,000 lei. Asociația Club Sportiv U-BT will be granted 3,000,000 lei for 2026.
The funding strategy also includes support for national sports federations. The Federația Română de Handbal will receive 800,000 lei, and the Federația Română de Volei will receive 600,000 lei. The Asociația Fotbal Club Universitatea Olimpia Cluj is allocated 470,000 lei, and the Federația Română de Tenis de Masă is set to receive 450,000 lei.
The total budget for sports projects in 2026 amounts to 30,800,000 lei. Cultural projects will receive a budget of 18,200,000 lei, while social projects are assigned 900,000 lei. The allocations reflect the local government's commitment to enhancing community engagement through sports and cultural development.
The analysis and selection commission, responsible for evaluating funding applications, published the project co-financing proposals at the end of May. It also rejected two appeals regarding funding allocations, ensuring that the process remained focused on eligible and timely applications. The upcoming council meeting will finalize the funding decisions, marking a significant investment in Cluj-Napoca's sports and cultural sectors for 2026.
The approval of these allocations is key for the continued growth and support of local sports clubs and cultural associations.
