Walking Month in Cluj-Napoca supports rural education
Cluj-Napoca's annual Walking Month, running June 8 to July 9, converts steps into educational resources for 500 students in rural Cluj county. Registration ends June 4.
Cluj-Napoca's annual Walking Month returns from June 8 to July 9, inviting residents to lace up their shoes and start counting steps. This year, the event introduces a new feature in its app, converting every kilometer walked into 1,250 steps, making each step more tangible. Registration remains open until June 4, supported by Cluj-Napoca City Hall, which has backed the initiative since its inception over a decade ago.
Unlike previous years, the 2026 edition has a distinct focus: supporting education in Cluj's rural communities. The steps taken by participants will benefit 'Ținem educația în mișcare' (We keep education in motion), a project by the Educalise Association. This initiative aims to provide practical workshops and educational activities for approximately 500 students across five rural communities in Cluj county, where resources are often scarce.
Andrei, a teacher from Cluj-Napoca, has participated in Walking Month for three years. He views this year's event as more than just exercise; it’s a chance to help bridge educational gaps in nearby communities. Having visited some of these areas, Andrei knows firsthand the challenges they face, and the prospect of his daily walks contributing to their education adds meaning to his efforts.
For Maria, a long-time participant, the event seamlessly combines fitness with philanthropy. Each evening, she walks a route through the Botanical Garden, along the Someșul Mic, and back through Mănăștur, knowing her steps support a greater cause. She values the tangible impact her participation can have, transforming routine walks into meaningful contributions.
Walking Month has become a staple of Cluj's summer calendar, a quiet yet powerful civic tradition. In a city bustling with activity, the simplicity of counting steps stands out. The event encourage a unique sense of community, as residents collectively contribute to a cause that transcends city limits.
Over the years, Walking Month has maintained its appeal by evolving with the community's needs. This year’s focus on education reflects a practical response to the geographical and resource challenges faced by rural students. The event’s ability to turn a simple act into educational support highlights its enduring relevance.
As June approaches, Cluj-Napoca's streets will fill with participants walking alone or in groups. Some will meticulously track each step, while others may casually forget to open the app. Regardless, the steps will accumulate, translating into educational resources for children in remote villages.
The modest exchange of steps for educational support is significant in a region where access to education is often shaped by distance. The initiative's practicality lies in its ability to bridge these gaps, offering real support where it’s needed most. More information and registration details are available at walkingmonth.
