George Simion's Rise in European Politics

George Simion, the leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), is gaining traction in European politics as a notable nationalist figure, according to the Financial Times. With a reported support rate of 37% in Romania, AUR surpasses other populist movements in the region. Simion, who has transitioned from the far-right margins to a potential contender for power, is now moderating his discourse to present himself as ready to govern.

In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Simion adopted a more restrained tone regarding the European Union, emphasizing that his objective is to prevent the EU from becoming a "Soviet Union." He expressed concerns about Romania's lack of influence within the EU, stating, "We are the sixth-largest country in the European Union and we do not have a voice."

Simion's office is adorned with portraits of medieval heroes, symbolizing his message that Romanian culture is under threat. Founded in 2019, AUR entered the Romanian Parliament in 2020, building its platform on Orthodox faith, family values, and freedom from Brussels. Simion is now seeking to broaden his electorate by appealing to those with economic grievances, amid declining trust in traditional parties due to corruption and economic challenges.

Despite his nationalist stance, Simion insists he does not support Romania's exit from the EU, calling it "the worst thing that could happen to Romania." He argues that Romanians reject perceived interference from Brussels and should independently decide on matters such as finance, agriculture, and health.

Simion has faced criticism for his opposition to EU support for Ukraine and sanctions on Russian oil and gas, which has affected his reputation. However, he rejects accusations of playing into Russia's hands, stating, "I am not a fan of the Russian world." He has also accused French President Emmanuel Macron of interfering in Romanian politics, citing statements and social media manipulation.

The Romanian Constitutional Court's decision to cancel the 2024 presidential elections before the second round, citing foreign state involvement, has added to the political turmoil. Simion claims that Romania faces a "big problem with democracy and transparency," echoing concerns about external influences.

Simion has publicly condemned past pogroms and their perpetrators and has banned AUR leaders from making revisionist statements. Despite ties to the radical nationalist zone, including ultranationalist candidate Călin Georgescu, Simion continues to navigate the complex political landscape, aiming to solidify his position as a key player in Romanian and European politics.
