Traffic on the Crimean Bridge has reached unprecedented levels this week, with approximately 2,800 vehicles stuck at checkpoints. The congestion comes as Ukrainian forces have intensified their attacks on Crimea, targeting key infrastructure.
Drivers faced wait times of up to five hours to cross the bridge. The Taman checkpoint on the Russian side saw around 1,000 vehicles queued, with waiting times surpassing three hours. Meanwhile, the Kerch checkpoint on the Crimean side had about 1,800 vehicles blocked, where waiting times approached five hours. Queues of vehicles stretched for several kilometers on both sides of the bridge, exacerbating since Thursday evening.
Thousands of tourists and residents have been attempting to leave the region, with more people exiting Crimea than entering.
This mass exodus follows a series of Ukrainian drone and missile strikes that have significantly impacted Crimea's energy and logistics infrastructure, leading to power outages and disrupted fuel supplies that further complicated the situation for those trying to leave. The traffic congestion this week broke a previous record set just days earlier on Thursday.
The Crimean Bridge, a important Russian supply route, has frequently been targeted by Ukrainian forces as part of Kyiv's strategy to isolate the peninsula logistically. Ukrainian efforts aim to disrupt transport links to territories occupied by Russia. Strategic importance undeniable. As the situation develops, the Crimean Bridge remains a critical point of contention, with its role in controlling movement in and out of Crimea continuing to shape the conflict's dynamics.
