US Marshals arrest Tate brothers in Miami on UK warrant

Andrew and Tristan Tate were detained by US Marshals at a Miami boxing event following new UK charges of rape and human trafficking. The arrests come after a Romanian court lifted their travel ban, and the UK is now seeking their extradition to face trial. Both brothers are dual US-UK citizens and face multiple serious charges.

US Marshals arrest Tate brothers in Miami on UK warrant

US Marshals arrested Andrew and Tristan Tate at a bare-knuckle boxing match in Miami on Saturday after British prosecutors filed new rape and human trafficking charges and requested extradition. The detention occurred at a private event, according to US authorities and international media.

The arrests follow a Romanian court decision in April 2026 that lifted a travel ban imposed while the brothers faced criminal investigations for sexual offenses. The UK Crown Prosecution Service confirmed it is seeking extradition to face trial in Britain after identifying additional alleged victims. Both brothers hold dual US-UK citizenship.

The US Marshals Service confirmed the arrests were carried out on a sealed warrant at the request of British authorities. The Miami detention coincided with heightened security in the city due to the third-place match of the 2026 World Cup, which drew large crowds and international attention.

A Department of Justice spokesperson told BBC the arrests were made "in accordance with extradition procedures." The Crown Prosecution Service said Andrew Tate faces seven new counts of rape, as well as charges related to sexual trafficking and child pornography. Tristan Tate has been charged with one count of sexual assault, two counts of rape, and three counts of organizing or facilitating human trafficking for sexual exploitation.

"These charging decisions were made following the receipt of a new case file from Bedfordshire Police and raise the total number of alleged victims in this case to seven," Malcolm McHaffie, head of the Special Crime Division at the CPS, said. The new charges reflect an expanded investigation based on additional evidence submitted by police in England, he added.

Andrew and Tristan Tate have consistently denied all allegations against them, both in the UK and in Romania. Their attorney, Joseph McBride, described the latest charges as a "political hit" and insisted on their innocence.

"The whole world knows that Andrew and Tristan are innocent," McBride said in a statement. He argued the new UK charges represent a misuse of prosecutorial authority and that a competent judge would recognize what he called an abuse of process.

The brothers' legal situation is complicated by ongoing criminal investigations in Romania, where they have also been accused of sexual and organized crime offenses. Romanian prosecutors have been investigating the Tates for alleged human trafficking, sexual relations with minors, and money laundering. The criminal case in Bucharest led to their initial arrest in December 2022, after which they spent time in pre-trial detention, house arrest, and under judicial supervision.

Despite the gravity of the charges in Romania, a court decision in April 2026 lifted all judicial control measures, allowing the Tates to leave the country. They relocated to Florida in February 2025, taking advantage of their American citizenship. The Romanian authorities' decision to permit their departure, even as investigations continued, sparked controversy within Romanian legal and political circles.

In July 2026, the Tates returned briefly to Romania to attend hearings at the headquarters of DIICOT, the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism. Romanian prosecutors announced at that time they were expanding their investigation to include additional offenses, beyond the original charges of human trafficking and rape filed in late 2024. The criminal file was sent back to prosecutors for further investigation in November 2024, reflecting the complexity and evolving nature of the case.

The UK extradition request now places the brothers at the center of two ongoing criminal investigations in separate countries, each involving multiple alleged victims and a range of sexual and trafficking offenses.

In May 2025, British prosecutors confirmed a list of 21 charges that Andrew and Tristan Tate would ultimately face in the UK. Andrew Tate is charged with 10 offenses, including rape, bodily harm, human trafficking, and profiting from prostitution, with allegations involving three victims. Tristan Tate faces 11 charges, including rape, bodily harm, and trafficking, with accusations involving a different victim.

The Crown Prosecution Service said the newly filed charges in July 2026 add four additional alleged victims, bringing the total to seven. The offenses are alleged to have occurred between July 2010 and August 2017, a period during which the Tates resided in the UK. The CPS said the new evidence from Bedfordshire Police was central to the decision to bring further charges.

In the United States, the Tates' arrest was carried out without incident at the Miami event. Images of the arrest circulated widely on social media, showing the brothers being taken into custody by armed US Marshals. The Department of Justice confirmed the arrests were conducted in accordance with established procedures for international extradition, pending a formal hearing.

The legal process now moves to US federal courts, where a judge will determine whether the extradition request from the UK meets the requirements set out in bilateral treaties. Extradition proceedings can be lengthy, particularly in high-profile cases involving multiple jurisdictions and overlapping criminal investigations. The Tates' dual citizenship may further complicate the process, as both the UK and Romania have open cases against them.

The controversy surrounding the Tates has been amplified by their public profiles as social media influencers and by the nature of the charges they face. Their supporters have characterized the proceedings as politically motivated, while prosecutors in both the UK and Romania have cited the seriousness of the alleged offenses and the number of victims involved.

Romanian authorities have not commented publicly on the impact of the UK extradition request on their own ongoing investigations. The DIICOT case remains open, with prosecutors continuing to gather evidence related to alleged human trafficking and sexual exploitation. The Romanian legal proceedings have been marked by delays, procedural challenges, and repeated extensions of the investigation timeline.

The Tates' movements between countries have drawn scrutiny since the lifting of their Romanian travel ban. Their presence in Florida since early 2025 was made possible by the April 2026 court decision in Bucharest, which removed all preventive measures. Legal analysts in Romania have questioned the wisdom of allowing the brothers to leave the country while serious charges remained unresolved.

The US Marshals Service, which specializes in federal fugitive operations and extradition cases, confirmed the brothers will remain in custody pending the outcome of the court process. The Department of Justice has not indicated how long the extradition hearing might take, nor whether the Tates will seek to contest their transfer to the UK.

The brothers' legal teams in both the US and the UK have indicated they will fight the extradition and challenge the basis of the new charges. Andrew and Tristan Tate remain in federal custody in Miami as the legal proceedings continue.
