Cluj activates emergency measures amid Orange Code heatwave
Cluj county is under an Orange Code heatwave alert with temperatures expected to reach up to 37°C. Prefect Maria Forna led a meeting to implement emergency measures. Pharmacies will serve as first aid points, and local authorities must ensure water access. Citizens are advised to stay hydrated and avoid sun exposure.
Cluj county is currently facing an Orange Code heatwave alert, with temperatures predicted to range between 33°C and 37°C, according to official meteorological forecasts. The heatwave, expected to persist until 10:00 AM on Monday, June 29, is exacerbated by a humidity-temperature index surpassing 80 units, intensifying the feeling of suffocation.
In response, the Cluj County Committee for Emergency Situations (CJSU) convened urgently under the coordination of Prefect Maria Forna. The committee adopted several emergency measures aimed at safeguarding the population against the severe effects of the heat.
All emergency institutions in Cluj are now tasked with round-the-clock monitoring of weather conditions. Additionally, 351 pharmacies throughout the county have been designated as first aid points, following a strategic protocol signed by DSP Cluj and the College of Pharmacists Cluj.
Assistance services are directed to identify and keep track of vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly and those with chronic illnesses. Local Emergency Committees are instructed to establish water and first aid stations, while local authorities are responsible for maintaining a steady supply of potable water and reporting any heat-related incidents to the Prefect or the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISU).
The risk of wildfires has increased due to the high temperatures and absence of rain, leading to a ban on open fires in areas with dry vegetation, agricultural lands, and near forests.
Authorities have issued several recommendations for residents: consume 2-4 liters of water daily, avoid alcoholic, sugary, and caffeinated beverages, and limit sun exposure and travel between 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM. It is advised to wear light-colored, natural fiber clothing, along with hats and sunglasses, and to keep windows and blinds closed during the day, ventilating only in the early morning or late evening.
Special attention should be given to children, the elderly, and those living alone or with chronic conditions. Under no circumstances should children or pets be left in parked cars. In cases of heatstroke or exhaustion, residents are urged to call emergency services at 112.
Prefect Maria Forna emphasized the importance of adhering to these guidelines, stating, "Respecting recommendations prevents serious incidents."
