Belgium beat USA 4-1, mock Trump's dance after FIFA row

Belgium advanced to the World Cup quarter-finals with a 4-1 win over the USA, highlighted by a post-match dance mocking former President Donald Trump. The celebration referenced Trump's involvement in a FIFA decision that allowed US player Folarin Balogun to play despite a red card. The incident sparked criticism from UEFA and the Belgian FA, but FIFA upheld the decision.

Belgium beat USA 4-1, mock Trump's dance after FIFA row

Belgium advanced to the World Cup quarter-finals with a 4-1 victory over the United States at Lumen Field on Monday, a match that ended with Romelu Lukaku and teammates performing a dance routine widely seen as mocking former President Donald Trump.

The celebration followed Lukaku's stoppage-time goal and mimicked Trump's signature campaign dance to "Y.M.C.A." by the Village People. Minutes later, Belgium's official social media account posted a photo of the celebration with the caption: "Overturn this."

Charles De Ketelaere scored twice for Belgium. Hans Vanaken added a third before halftime. Lukaku's late strike sealed the result and prompted the gesture that dominated post-match coverage.

The phrase "Overturn this" was interpreted as a response to Trump's involvement in the controversy over Folarin Balogun's suspension. Trump confirmed in a White House speech that he contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino to request a review of Balogun's red card. "I was the one that got them to do it," Trump said.

Balogun received a red card in the United States' 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. The automatic one-match ban was set to rule him out of the Belgium match. FIFA then announced the suspension of the ban for a year, making Balogun eligible. The decision drew immediate criticism from UEFA and the Royal Belgian Football Association.

The RBFA lodged an appeal against the ruling on Monday. FIFA's Appeals Committee rejected the challenge.

UEFA accused FIFA of "crossing a red line" and called the suspension "incomprehensible and unjustifiable." The public dispute between governing bodies added to the charged atmosphere surrounding the fixture.

Infantino addressed the criticism in a statement published on UEFA's social media channels. He confirmed his conversation with Trump but emphasized that FIFA's judicial bodies operate independently. "FIFA's judicial bodies are independent. They operate autonomously, apply the FIFA Disciplinary Code, and decide cases based on the applicable regulations and the specific facts before them," Infantino said.

He added that he regularly discusses World Cup matters with heads of state, including Trump, but stressed that FIFA's legal processes remain separate from outside influence. "During our conversation, I explained that there was an ongoing legal process involving FIFA's independent judicial bodies and that the case would be decided in due course by the competent bodies," Infantino wrote.

Infantino acknowledged that he sometimes disagrees with decisions made by FIFA's Disciplinary Committee. He insisted that respect for the autonomy of these bodies protects the credibility of FIFA's competitions. "Whether we personally like a decision or not is irrelevant. Respect for independent institutions and the rule of law is what protects the integrity of our competitions and the credibility of FIFA at all times," he said.

Belgium coach Rudi Garcia called the win "satisfying" given the backdrop of controversy and the pressure on his side to perform. De Ketelaere's two goals gave Belgium a commanding lead. Vanaken's strike extended the advantage before halftime. The United States briefly threatened a comeback, but Lukaku's stoppage-time goal extinguished any hope.

Clay Travis, a US sports commentator, posted a photo of the celebration on July 7, 2026, noting the pointed nature of Belgium's gesture. The incident gained traction online, with observers interpreting it as a form of trash talk aimed at the US team and its political supporters.

The RBFA's failed appeal and UEFA's public criticism highlight tensions between European football authorities and FIFA over disciplinary procedures and governance. The episode also highlight the increasing involvement of political figures in international football decisions, a trend that has drawn scrutiny from fans and institutional stakeholders.

Belgium face Spain in the quarter-finals on Friday, July 10. The celebration and social media post drew immediate attention from FIFA officials, who are reviewing whether the actions violated conduct regulations.
