On Wednesday, police conducted three home searches as part of an investigation into alleged sexual offenses against minors, targeting the former priest and folk singer Cristian Pomohaci, 57, according to judicial sources cited by aktual24.ro. The searches are part of ongoing efforts to gather evidence related to accusations that Pomohaci engaged in consensual sexual relations with male minors under the age of 16 since 2022.
Pomohaci, who hails from Rebrișoara in Bistrița-Năsăud, has been embroiled in multiple criminal cases over the years, including allegations of sexual and economic offenses. He first gained public attention in 2017 when accusations surfaced that he recruited minors for sexual purposes and engaged in sexual acts with them. Despite these accusations, which were supported by alleged victim statements, the General Prosecutor's Office took over the case but eventually closed it in 2018 and 2019 due to the statute of limitations.
In 2017, the Romanian Orthodox Church defrocked Pomohaci, acknowledging the seriousness of the accusations against him. Pomohaci, however, denied all allegations, maintaining his innocence. Public criticism has persisted, particularly concerning his involvement in activities with children following the closure of his case.
In 2018, Pomohaci faced another investigation for continuous tax evasion, involving the rental of 11 apartments without paying taxes, causing financial damage estimated at 130,000 RON (approximately 28,000 EUR). He signed a plea bargain, paid the damages, and received a one-year suspended sentence, which became final in 2020. Pomohaci benefited from a 2021 law allowing those convicted of tax evasion to avoid prison by paying damages and a fine. Consequently, the Mureș Tribunal replaced his sentence with a 40,000 RON fine and removed complementary prohibitions.
Despite being defrocked, Pomohaci has been accused of illegally officiating religious services and has been involved in other public controversies. He continues to perform as an artist and participates in publicly funded events, though he is not a member of the AUR party. In May 2025, he appeared in an electoral clip for George Simion and praised Simion at a country fair, stating, "I want to shake the hand of a real man."
