Romanian Parliament Resumes with Focus on Government Formation

The Romanian Parliament has resumed its activities on September 1, 2026, marking the beginning of the second ordinary session of the year.

The presidents of both parliamentary chambers convened the sessions in accordance with constitutional and regulatory requirements. The Senate's Standing Bureau is scheduled to meet at 12:00, followed by a plenary session at 16:00. The Chamber of Deputies will also hold its plenary session at 16:00. The initial focus will be on electing permanent bureau members. Selections are based on party proposals.

The formation of a new government is a central issue for this session. President Nicușor Dan is expected to restart consultations in early September to designate a new Prime Minister. The legislative agenda includes unitary wage projects and education reforms. These priorities reflect presentations by various parliamentary parties.

The Liberal Party has expressed support for reforms in public administration, state companies, the electoral system, and health. Meanwhile, the AUR party has proposed reducing the number of MPs to 300, introducing two-round mayoral elections, and implementing term limits.

The USR party has announced plans for administrative reform, changes to the intelligence services, adjustments to part-time taxation, and improved online protection for minors. They also propose changes to the electoral law. Reforms in the functioning of the National Integrity Agency (ANI) are included.

The PSD party has called for a political agreement centered around ten national priorities, including energy, reindustrialization, the defense industry, and revenue collection. Their agenda also covers education, health, agriculture, and the interests of the EU and NATO.

A packed agenda. This parliamentary session will test the ability of politicians to form a government majority and implement important reforms.
