A recent survey conducted by tbi bank in July 2026 reveals that only 48% of Romanians manage to save money on a monthly or near-monthly basis. The survey, which included 1,223 respondents, sheds light on the financial challenges faced by many in Romania.

The survey highlights that 25% of Romanians save only occasionally, while 22% do not save at all and instead rely on their reserves. Financial pressures, such as increased living costs and low incomes, significantly impact the ability of Romanians to save, according to the survey findings.

Gergana Staykova, who commented on the survey, noted, "Saving is a fragile balance, not a financial plan," emphasizing the precarious nature of saving in the current economic climate. Staykova also pointed out that rising costs are limiting the amounts people can save.

The survey found that 46% of respondents save a maximum of RON 500 per month, and 16% are unable to save any money at all. Additionally, 22% of those surveyed save between 11% and 20% of their income, while another 22% save between 6% and 10%.

Savings habits have deteriorated for many Romanians, with 42% reporting that they save less than they did last year. Notably, 9% of individuals who previously saved regularly now find themselves unable to do so.

for saving priorities, 29% of respondents save for emergencies, and 20% aim for financial security or independence. However, 36% only save leftover money after covering necessary expenses. The survey also indicates that 23% of Romanians have less than one month's expenses saved for emergencies, and another 22% have savings that would cover one to three months' expenses.

Romanians tend to prefer safe and accessible savings methods, with 23% keeping their savings in current accounts and 22% opting for bank deposits. The survey identifies food price increases and low incomes as major obstacles to saving, cited by 26% and 25% of respondents, respectively.

to 2026, financial goals for many Romanians focus on building reserves and ensuring stability, driven by fears related to health and income security. The survey reveals that 20% of participants aim to save more in 2026, while 15% intend to protect their existing savings. Additionally, 30% of respondents express concern about financial impacts from health problems, and 21% worry about potential job loss.

the survey highlights the challenges faced by Romanians in managing their finances and highlights the importance of financial discipline and secure savings habits.
