Salonta hosts massive bison goulash event aiming for world record
During Salonta Days, a massive bison goulash event aimed for a world record with 10,000 portions served in two hours. The event, featuring Chef Cătălin Scărlătescu, was documented for Guinness World Records.

A large crowd gathered in the center of Salonta on Sunday for a bison goulash event, which was part of the annual Salonta Days celebration. The goulash, prepared in a giant cauldron with a capacity of 5,100 liters, was one of the main attractions of the festival. The organizers aimed to set a world record for the largest bison goulash, though official validation from Guinness World Records has yet to be secured.
Chef Cătălin Scărlătescu, a prominent Romanian culinary figure, participated in the preparation of the dish, which saw approximately 10,000 portions consumed in just two hours. Salonta Days, marking 420 years since the city's attestation, spanned from Friday to Sunday. The fire for the goulash was lit at 3 AM on Sunday morning, allowing for the extensive cooking process required for such a large quantity of food.
The cauldron was filled with 990 kilograms of meat, 1,500 kilograms of potatoes, 200 kilograms of carrots, and 500 kilograms of onions. Over 200 volunteers were involved in preparing these ingredients in the days leading up to the event. Images published on Salonta City Hall's Facebook page captured the bustling scene, with hundreds gathered in the central area as volunteers distributed portions.
The consumption was organized with postcards that participants obtained in exchange for a 5 lei donation, each postcard redeemable for one portion of goulash. Despite the absence of a Guinness World Records representative, the entire preparation process was filmed as part of the documentation required for record consideration. The organizers have expressed their intention to submit this evidence to Guinness World Records for validation.
The event underscored the community spirit of Salonta, bringing together residents and visitors alike to celebrate the city's rich history and cultural heritage. The attempt to set a world record added a layer of excitement to the festivities. As the city commemorates its 420-year history, the Salonta Days festival serves as a reminder of its vibrant cultural field.
The bison goulash event, with its ambitious goals and community involvement, highlights the city's ongoing efforts to promote its unique traditions on a global stage. The next steps involve compiling the filmed footage and documentation for submission to Guinness World Records. Although the record validation process can take several months, the organizers remain optimistic about achieving recognition for their culinary feat.
