Internal crisis in PSD: Toma's demand for resignation stirs waters

It is fascinating how things in Romanian politics can change overnight. From a party meeting to an unexpected press conference and then to a full-blown crisis, everything seems to unfold at a dizzying speed. Recently, the Mayor of Buzău, Constantin Toma, made a bold move by publicly demanding the resignation of Sorin Grindeanu from the leadership of PSD. As if that wasn't enough, Toma also called for the withdrawal from the front line of the political couple from Craiova, Lia Olguța Vasilescu and Claudiu Manda, whom he referred to as "the two spouses from Craiova." In Toma's view, the current leadership is directly responsible for PSD's collapse in the polls, accusing them of disastrous management of political negotiations.

Toma pointed directly at Lia Olguța Vasilescu, accusing her of "putting fuel on the fire" with her recent statements. The messages coming from Craiova, which instigated the idea that the party must "get rid of Bolojan," pushed PSD into a completely wrong strategy, Toma argues. This attitude unnecessarily strained relations with political partners while Ilie Bolojan remained in his position, and the country was left in a critical situation.

In Toma's opinion, PSD has reached an extremely dangerous point, with a historical low of only 13-14% in voter preferences. This is an alarming figure that should ring alarm bells for all party members. To overcome this deadlock and stabilize the political scene, Toma calls for a radical change at the top of PSD, one that is capable of correctly resuming negotiations for a new governing coalition alongside PNL, USR, and UDMR.

While many wonder if Sorin Grindeanu, Lia Olguța Vasilescu, and Claudiu Manda have begun to sing the "swan song" for PSD, the party's hard core seems not to realize the gravity of the situation yet. It is a moment of introspection for the social democrats, who must quickly decide whether they will continue on the same path or choose to make the necessary changes to get back on track.

It is interesting to observe how a single individual, like Constantin Toma, can trigger such a storm in a party with such a long and rich history. Perhaps this is a signal that PSD needs to reinvent itself, rediscover its values, and adapt to new political realities. In a way, Toma has given voice to the frustrations of many party members who feel that the current direction is not the right one. It remains to be seen if his call will be heard and if PSD will manage to find its way during this tumultuous period.
