Brașov-Făgăraș highway secures environmental approval

The Brașov County Environmental Directorate issued a draft Environmental Agreement for the Brașov-Făgăraș highway project on Sunday, June 7. The approval includes strict conditions to protect sensitive areas and ensures the project avoids direct impact on existing buildings. The highway, valued at RON 7.74 billion (EUR 1.47 billion), will connect Cristian with the future Sibiu–Făgăraș motorway, currently under construction.

The route will pass through five localities: Codlea, Dumbrăvița, Șinca, Șercaia, and Mândra, with a design speed of 120 km/h. Spanning a land footprint of 561 hectares, the highway will use 334 hectares of arable land, 137 hectares of grasslands, and 44 hectares of forest. Notably, it crosses the Natura 2000 site ROSAC0352 Perșani, a critical corridor for brown bears, wolves, and lynxes.

To mitigate environmental impact, the project includes a 300-meter cut-and-cover tunnel, also known as an ecoduct, and plans for 16 viaducts and 18 bridges. The project will also protect the Șercaia, Veneția, and Hârtibaciu watercourses and features 415 sedimentation basins and oil and grease separators. The highway will begin in the northern part of the Brașov municipality, connecting with Highway A3 (Râșnov-Cristian section), and proceed northwest, crossing the Brașov metropolitan area.

The construction phase is estimated to last 36 months, with activities limited to between 7 AM and 10 PM. The environmental agreement specifies that no houses or annexes will be demolished, although utilities will need relocation. Construction machinery is restricted to a speed of 30 km/h, and soil handling is prohibited during strong winds to minimize dust and disruption.

The project requires substantial materials, including 4.7 million cubic meters of concrete, 627,000 tons of asphalt mixtures, and 1.6 million tons of cement. Such requirements underscore the scale and complexity of the construction effort. The highway’s approval is seen as a significant step forward in regional infrastructure development, promising to enhance connectivity between Brașov and Sibiu once completed.

The project’s emphasis on environmental protection reflects increasing scrutiny on infrastructure developments intersecting with sensitive ecological areas. The Brașov County Environmental Directorate's approval is a important milestone, ensuring that the highway's development aligns with environmental standards. As the project progresses, ongoing monitoring will be necessary to maintain compliance with the established conditions.
